Camper Spotlight: Tyler Kerr

Tyler has been coming to summer camp at Camp Mason for six years and not only that, he and his family are regular contributors at our biannual Volunteer Work Weekend. He agreed to be interviewed by Program Director, Anna Bilton in between splitting and stacking firewood for camp at the Fall Work Weekend.

1. How long have you been coming to Camp Mason?

Five as a camper, one as a CIT (counselor-in training).

2. Why do you keep coming back?

To see my friends. And the prospect of meeting new friends. Also for the staff, yeah, mainly for the staff each year.

3. What advice would you give to a camper coming to Mason for the first time?

Try to step out of your comfort zone. Don’t be afraid to try something new. My first summer, I didn’t really try anything new but the next summer I did and it was so much more fun.

4. What is something you learned at camp that has been useful in the rest of your life, perhaps at school or at home?

The CIT program taught me leadership skills. I learned how to communicate with others.

5. If you had to sum up Camp Mason in one sentence what would you say?

Give me some time to think about it. It’s not easy in just one sentence. Ok,

‘Where strangers become family in two weeks or less.’

 6. What is your favorite evening activity?

Ragnarok (a game where three teams compete against one another to collect the most balls). The whole camp is involved and we all play together. It’s energetic and a lot of fun.

7. Finally, the most important question: grilled cheese or tacos?

Grilled cheese because tacos come with refried beans. (Tyler no longer likes refried beans after having a surplus on his CIT backpacking trip in 2014).

Thanks Tyler! We’re so glad that you keep spending your summers at Camp Mason.
