Safety
Nothing is more important than the safety of our
campers! Our top priority is the health
and welfare of the entire camp community. We take this responsibility seriously.
All of our staff are interviewed and have extensive
reference checks. Federal and state background
checks are also conducted. The staff training program is a full seven days – with many key staff members
receiving an additional preliminary week of training. Their training includes components regarding
emergency procedures, managing camper behavior, child abuse prevention, and
other important topics.
Within the cabin environment, our staff-to-camper ratio is
1:5 or better. For our younger campers,
this ratio is 1:4. When all
staff (village directors, program staff, and medical staff) are figured in, the overall ratio is close to one staff member for every three
campers.
Camp Mason has a fully-equipped health center to address the
medical needs of our community. The
health center is staffed by a registered nurse 24 hours a day. We work with Sparta Medical Associates (a pediatric
practice in Blairstown – 15 minutes from camp) and maintain an open appointment
each day during the summer.
We have established communications with the local Blairstown
emergency squads (EMT, Fire, Police), and the nearest hospital – Newton Memorial – is
just 20 minutes from camp.
Prior to the summer camp experience, we ask our families to
complete a detailed health history form for all our campers. This document – including such details as
medications, allergies, and other pertinent information – allows us to
meet the health and safety needs of every camper.
Camp Mason is accredited by the American Camp
Association. This accreditation includes an annual review of all aspects of our operation – staffing, food service, maintenance,
medical, program and more - and a site visit every three years. Our summer camp director is a trained ACA visitor himself. For more information about the ACA, click on the logo below:
